    STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.
  • Zoom
    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Zoom
    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.
  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
Standard Features

Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing saw, worth the cost. This is my 3rd stihl chainsaw.I have a 26 and 261, both good saws but often found I needed a larger saw for bigger trees. After a lot of indecision on the purchase of a 461 just based on trying to justify the $1100 cost, I'm very pleased with the saw. I purchased with standard 20" and added 28" bar and chain. First tree was 36" stump and the 28" bar worked great. I was amazed by how much torque this saw had over my 261, hands down a brute. I would highly recommend this saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why did I wait! I've had a 271 Farm Boss with a 18" bar since 2011. It runs great but my source for wood become larger in diameter which created extra work. Purchased 461 with a 25" bar yesterday afternoon, got it home and did in 1/2 hour what normally took 2. Why did I wait....Dependability, give me 5 years and I'll review once again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Man, what a saw I own a ms290 farm boss Which is a really good saw, but I wanted more power. This saw delivers. It has a compression release that makes cranking the saw a lot easier. Used it on 20"+ oak logs and it went thru them like butter. I love this saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW Tornado hit my house in Feb of 16 I live in the woods to say the least I originally purchased a ms251 to begin clean up i was impressed worked it 2 days straight with zero problems a few months and some research later I wanted to get more work done a Lititle faster and I noticed the ms461 was just what I was hunting I bought it and headed straight to my backyard and wow what a saw I have a 25" bar and it will spit out wood chunks like no other previously we have used other top name saws but never could leave them sitting for a month and go back and crank them I have had both my stihls for 8 months with out a hiccup never will I buy another make of saw #stihlusa

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is well balanced, for all day work. This is my second MS 461 saw. Had a new one last year , still running. Wanted a new one, using old one for back up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw. Dependable Great saw for felling and for firewood. A bit heavy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of power I been using chainsaws a long time mostly firewood and storm related but also own and manage several hundred acres of timber. I have two stihls already the 028 WB and MS 290 but wanted something with a bit more power so recently purchased the MS 461 with a 25" bar and not disappointed one bit. It has power to spare on most cutting jobs plenty of torque to go along with it. Very happy with my new addition and knowing of my use of sthils since mid 1970"s how reliable they are as my older stihl saws run great even now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My working Buddy When it comes to really big jobs and working all day long, this is my go-to machine. Efficient, low fuel consumption, longer run times and reduced emissions. Strong enough to cut smoothly, no bucking or binding make it safe for all day operation in the deep woods. .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just as good as the MS 460, but better The MS 460 is a great saw, but the MS 461 is even better. You can cut longer and it seems like more power. I always run 93 octane in 2 cycle engines. Ran 4.5 tanks of fuel through it. The saw over 8+ cord of firewood in less than 5 hours We generally cut and sell 50+ cord a year. Well worth buying it. If you are going to cut a lot buy professional grade, not farm and ranch or homeowners. My MS 460 was a 2009 model in decent shape, but it blew a seal and clutch. Compression was 170 psi. It got pinched. I can't find anything wrong with the MS 461. I guess some loggers are just set in there ways. Thank you Smith's Saws and Service

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute work horse I have been running this saw for over a year and it is bullet proof. I have have fell, bucked, limbed and even climbed with it, and it is relentless! With the 28" bar it eats wood alive, and it still excels with a 36" bar. I am sold on this saw, it is worth every penny. Very dependable

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thumbs up to the MS461 Great saw. Running a 28" bar with filed down rakes on an aggressive chain and this saw just EATS. I've put a solid season on this saw and its chewed up everything I've thrown at it. This saw is fun to run! However, I do not recommend it for beginners.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw "does work"! If you want "one saw", this is the saw. Smooth, light for its size, and runs all day through the hardest wood without blinking. It's also the last saw without the microchip in the pro models. Mine is configured with the 25 inch bar, which works for almost all applications and it is easy on the back for guys at my height (i.e., 6'3"), because I do not have to bend over. In short, buy the saw and you will be glad you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of power I bought this saw to replace 3 older Stihls. I cut approximately 20 chords of wood for winter. This saw has never failed me once. Fuel consumption is fantastic, and oil capacity is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product does have great features such as the advanced carburetor and air filter, decompression valve and ease of chain adjustment. I purchased this saw yesterday. Based on the reliability of the MS460 Magnum I expect even better performance from the MS 461 R. I expect that my wife and I will be out of the forest much sooner with our 5 cords of fuel wood this year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw So...after thinking long and hard between an MS 661 and the MS 461 I chose the 461... and i was not disappointed with my choice! This thing is an animal! With a 25 inch bar on it you can't go wrong. Came with a 20 inch bar on it but it kinda looked funny. It chews any type of wood i throw at it.... hard or soft, and its always hungry for more!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Brand new sucks We bought this saw 2 yrs ago. Seller put new gas in it. Ran horrible. Took it back. Come to find out the seller had put oil in the already premixed gas. Fouled the plug. Took it back home. Bucked our wood up. Then the next time we tried to start it. Nope wouldn't run, Again. So we used the old reliable saw. So again this year we are on our way to get this hardly ever ran saw worked on again..... We always put in the recommended new gas in it. Maybe we got a lemon saw. Thank goodness for th O44... RW

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stihl, you can't beat em Started with the 090 25 years ago and the 044, now up to 460,461,660, 661. All these are great saws and if it's a Stihl professional grade saw you can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stihl is the best I bought this saw earlier this morning and it cut every tree that I fell today like a hot knife through warm butter I've always been pleased with Stihl and this one it just makes me a firm believer again. PS it was just so easy to use and first crank on a big saw you can't beat that

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stihl's 461 is a Great Chainsaw! This is a workhorse of a saw!I've used Stihl saws for 30 years and this saw is excellent. I'm no longer a young man and the saw's weight is significant. When making cuts in the horizontal (felling trees) the weight of the saw is a load. When making a vertical cut the weight really works for you. This saw rips through 24" inch hardwood logs with ease. In short, recognize the strength it takes to make horizontal cuts and you I'll be pleased with this awesome chainsaw! I'm in the middle of a logging project on the family farm and I'm sold on this saw. I think you won't be disappointed. I am a pleased customer and a very demanding customer. BTW my dealer is number 1 as well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw! Have had this saw for two years now, and cut upwards of ten cords a year, so far this saw has been a real power house. It has cut nothing but oak and hardwoods, and has never missed a beat. A bit pricey but worth the money. As with any stihl product it is well worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Saw I bought this saw to replace a nearly 30 year old Dolmar that I was completely happy with, but could no longer get parts for. I could not be happier with the Stihl. It is the same weight as my old Dolmar, but is 20cc larger and the productivity increase with the horsepower is amazing. My only regrets are that I did not make the jump sooner and that I did not listen to my dealer and get the 28" bar. I bought the 25" bar instead thinking that it would be more manageable. The shorter bar just forces me to bend over limbing and is harder on the back. A 28" Stihl bar is in my near future. If you're not a pro and are thinking that 76cc is too much horsepower, it really isn't. You just get more cutting done faster, and that really matters in the winter when you're short on daylight hours. Now, the cutting gets done quickly instead of being a long, drawn out chore. The work is also much less fatiguing. The weight to power ratio of this saw is really fantastic. The saw starts and runs perfectly - hot or cold. The side chain adjuster is a joy to use. They have made good strides with chain brakes and this one actuates easily with no danger of inadvertent activation. I'm really liking the master control switch. It took some getting used to, but it turns out to be a real improvement. I also like the ease that the saw can be switched from summer to winter use just by moving a baffle plate on the air filter cover.I'm still on the fence with the tool-less oil and fuel caps, but they haven't been a big issue. If you're on the fence, make the jump. You'll be happy you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More power! I have been using Stihl chainsaws since 1984 to cut firewood for personal use. That first saw,an 028 AV Wood boss, has cut twenty cord a year for twenty five years before I purchased a second saw. The newer saw a MS 290 just didn't seem to have the power of the 028, so I went to the MS 461.Now this saw has the power to run a 25" chain through some large oaks, cherry, hickory, and locust without bogging down. I have hauled five cord cut with this saw. That isn't all that much to give a fair rating on the dependability of this saw. With the larger more powerful engine comes more weight though. But it balances out nicely. Once I am done with the big timber I plan on switching to a 20" bar and chain. The fuel usage doesn't seem to be any more than either of the smaller saws.I am quite impressed with the MS 461 so far. For that matter Stihl products too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best We used these as our main fire saws in AK forestry. Also used them for hazard tree removal, bucking out of roadways and bucking up large firewood in Washington.Wonderfully balanced, plenty of power to run a 32" bar with a full-skip chisel chain, easy to start, maintain, run, pretty to look at, and dependable when putting your back cut into a tree. Can't say enough good things about this saw. Stihl really hit the mark with these. REALLY.I do have one complaint: I'm now a home-owner, north of Seattle, and no longer at my old job, where I got to use one of these regularly. I wish I had a reason to buy one for myself! You want a great saw? Buy this one! Period

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed with cutting speed I have used Stihl professional saws for over 10 years and am very happy with them. I wish I had gotten a larger saw sooner. I cut 15 cords of firewood a year and recently got into a little milling since I had some nice logs. I am very impressed with the power and fuel usage. I think I am using less fuel per cord than the MS260 or MS362 if cutting big wood. It saves my back to noodle big rounds to a manageable size instead of fighting to get them split. I even use it for smaller wood as it is so fast I hardly notice the extra weight cutting up a truckloads worth. My wife will be happy that I won't be spending as much time cutting wood. It needs all it has to mill a 24" oak into boards though, and a larger saw may be better for milling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw- enough for any job The reviews here were very helpful and when I bought my saw this summer I vowed to pay it forward with a detailed review of my own.I recently bought a large property with a special type of wood burning ceramic kiln on it which burns 7 cords of wood in 3 days. The property is in the coastal mountains of Oregon where the trees are huge- I burn fir and oak. I had good chainsaw experience before buying the saw but I didn't understand the relative power of each model of saw so figuring out what to buy was a bit of a challenge. I wanted a saw that would run a 36" bar and would be suited to buck 20-50 cords of wood a year. I was considering the 660 as well as the 362.I've now cut about 35 cords with it, fir and oak up to 50" in diameter with a 25" and 36" bar. It cuts fast and hasn't hesitated even on the largest logs that dwarf the 36" bar. Given that, I'm glad I didn't go with the 660- it's noticeably heavier and using even the 461 is a solid workout with a longer bar on it. I'm 6', in my 20s and bench about 200- and my limit for a day's bucking work is about 8 cords. I have an office job during the week and my opinion is that unless you're working outside every day or an absolute bear the 660 is larger and more powerful than you'll functionally need and it will wear you out fast. With my experience, I would only recommend a bigger saw for those who want to use a chainsaw mill or for people who want to save five minutes bucking up a quick cord but you're stopping at that. The 461 is a great balance of weight, power, efficiency and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to work at a professional speed on big cutting jobs. But if you're not regularly attacking wood over 25" I wouldn't hesitate to go with a smaller saw to lighten the load. Be sure to get multiple chains with your saw- I use a full skip chain but it dulls rather quickly so its a big time saver to have an extra chain or two on hand to switch into when one gets dull. Be prepared to get good at sharpening chains...
